At Smith Optics Australia, we believe that how we explore the world matters just as much as where we go. That’s why we’re proud to support Project Zero, a bold, carbon-neutral expedition led by father-son duo Geoff and Kitale Wilson, and the powerful storytelling behind 'A Silent Rebellion", a mini-documentary produced in collaboration with Smith and filmmaker Kitale Wilson.

In a time when the effects of climate change are becoming impossible to ignore, Project Zero offers more than just an epic journey—it’s a call to rethink how we adventure. Spanning two years and seven legs, from Antarctica to the Arctic, this expedition is uncovering the real-time impacts of global warming in some of the planet’s most remote and fragile environments.

A Journey with Purpose

Project Zero is not just about reaching the ends of the Earth—it’s about doing so responsibly. The expedition is entirely carbon-neutral, setting a new benchmark for sustainable exploration. Geoff, a seasoned polar explorer, and Kitale, a rising filmmaker, are documenting their journey to raise awareness, spark dialogue, and inspire action.

Their mission aligns with our own values at Smith: to protect the wild places we love to explore and to champion innovation that respects the planet. Whether it’s through the gear we design or the initiatives we support, we’re committed to reducing our environmental footprint and encouraging others to do the same.

A Journey Through Silence and Urgency

In A Silent Rebellion, Dr. Geoff and Kitale Wilson traverse the rugged landscapes of Iceland—on foot and hoof—equipped with high performing SMITH eyewear and helmets and an unwavering sense of purpose. Battling fierce winds, floating in glacial waters, and navigating snowstorms with limited visibility, they immerse themselves in the raw power and beauty of nature.

“Every step across Iceland felt like we were walking through a warning,” says Kitale Wilson.

At the peak of their journey, atop the vast Vatnajökull Glacier—one of the largest and fastest-receding glaciers on Earth—they’re met not only with awe, but with a sobering truth: even the mightiest natural wonders are vulnerable to human impact.

“Glaciers disappearing, unpredictable storms… it was clear the planet is changing faster than we think. A Silent Rebellion isn’t just a story of adventure—it’s a wake-up call,” Kit reflects.

This film is a quiet but powerful reminder that we all have a role to play. It’s about recognising the changes happening around us and choosing to respond—with awareness, with action, and with care for the world we share.

Why We joined the journey.

We see Project Zero as more than a partnership—it’s a shared journey. We’re inspired by Geoff and Kitale’s commitment to exploring differently, and we’re proud to stand with them as they chart a new course for adventure—one that leaves no trace, but leaves a lasting impact.

Kitale reinforces why they chose Smith this time around, "It's about having the perfect combination of sunglasses and goggles for every condition."

"Smith Optics for me has the tech right, and it works in multiple different conditions" Geoff mentions that after suffering from severe snow blindness on a previous expedition with another brand, Geoff will only adventure with Smith eyewear from now on.

Because seeing the world clearly means protecting it, too.

If you get the chance to watch A Silent Rebellion, don’t miss it. The film’s visual storytelling is breathtaking—but it’s the raw beauty of nature that truly steals the show.

This isn’t just a film; it’s a quiet call to action. It invites you to reflect, to reconnect, and to rebel—silently, purposefully, and in your own way. Whether that means choosing more sustainable gear, rethinking how you travel, or simply spending more time in nature with intention, A Silent Rebellion will leave you inspired to protect what matters most.
